Amazon’s German, Spanish, and United Kingdom’s (UK) platforms have been placed on the United States (US) Trade Representative’s (USTR) 2020 “Notorious Markets” list due to having “high levels of counterfeit goods” on these platforms.
European platforms were found to list high volumes of counterfeit goods including, amazon.co.uk, amazon.es, amazon.it, amazon.de, and amazon.fr. Rightsholders are concerned that the seller information displayed by Amazon is often misleading which makes it difficult for brand owners and consumers to establish who is selling the goods. Brand owners have said to the USTR that Amazon’s European based domains “do not sufficiently vet sellers”. Complainants have stated that Amazon’s removal process is “lengthy and burdensome, even for rightsholders that enrol in Amazon’s brand protection programmes”.
